I get the "A referral was returned from the server" error message when trying to run any version (32/64bit signed) of the program after I upgraded to the Anniversary Edition.
Certificate issue? |

Yep, certificate isn't installed. You can download the portable zip, the cert is inside. Should be able to install the cert into trusted root authority. |

Hmm, not seeing any separate certificate files in the portable zip. |

Should be a .cer file in the signed zip. Or did I combine those into a single zip...hmm, can't recall and I've been drinking :D |

Right you are, I've updated the ZIPs to include the cert. |

Ok, tried installing the cert by just opening it and using the defaults... Although the cert seems to have installed correctly, I still get the same message when I try to run the program. Tried a reboot and run, same result.
Suggestions? |

Hmm, I've heard of one other person having a similar issue, but I cannot reproduce it...making it difficult to fix.
You can check the event viewer or run something like Process Monitor if you want to dig into it. Or you can:
1. Run the unsigned version, which means S+ won't be able to interact with the Start Screen, and programs running elevated. 2. Run S+ as administrator, but know that it won't auto start with Windows without being signed, so it's a little annoying
I'd love to find out why you're having this issue, but it's nearly impossible without sitting at your computer unless I can get some exact steps and configurations to reproduce the error. |

Update... I can see the cert under Certificates - Current User / Intermediate Certification Authorities / Certificates: StrokesPlusCert 2039-12-31 <All> <None>.
I get the "This CA Root certificate is not trusted because it is not in the Trusted Root Certification Authorities store." so I deleted it and reinstalled it there. So far so good.
Kind of a kludge at the moment. Any ETA on a real cert? |

I don't make enough money in donations to pay for a cert every year. Though I'm working (slowly) on a new version of S+ which will be paid and will have a real cert. |

Oh, and the install is supposed to install the cert so you shouldn't have had to do this step, just in case you were thinking everyone needs to go through this =) |

Also, just an FYI. I am beginning to see this more and more on Win10AU(1607) installs with self signing cert programs (mostly handy utility software like yours).
I see a lot of references to other authors noting security changes in Win10AU (more locked down in this version, which is probably for the best) but also SHA1 being depreciated in general. Not sure if this is exactly the problem here, but it seems related.
Security... a general pain in the ass, but a necessary evil. :/ |

How much do you need for an annual real cert? I'm sure that with a goal in mind, we'd all be more than happy to get you there. |
