What action to use that can close the active window?

acSendKeys("^w"), for CTRL+W will usually work for most programs. Or acCloseApplication(), which just sends the WM_CLOSE to the main owner window. There are certainly other ways to achieve this, but this is a pretty simple start.

some programs simply don't receive those actions.

acSendKeys("%{F_4}") is another way of doing it. But if you're working with multiple tabs, it closes whole browser.
