Has the recent Windows 8.1 update killed modifier keys (shift, alt, ctrl)?

They still work fine for me...

I have some gestures with Ctrl. Now I must press Ctrl first to perform them. My ignore key (Shift) is broken too. It must be cancelled by other key now.

Did you install all updates? Optional too? Microsoft did some "precision touchpad improvements". Well, I have only a mouse. Could it be related?

Turns out I don't have update 1 installed. Kicked it off this morning before work, will take a look when I get home.

Confirmed, with Windows 8 Update 1, the keyboard hook is hosed. I am leaving town for a few days and won't be able to research.

What's interesting, or perhaps more frustrating, is that if I run S+ from outside of Program Files, the hook is fine...however, by doing that, S+ cannot interact with the Start screen.

This is probably going to be rather complicated...damn you, Microsoft!

They just like to annoy their users. Let's hope you can beat them.

Also Windows 8.1 user here.
S+ recently was disabling itself with no apparent resason, which is quite frustrating.
I assume this Windows Update you are talking about in this thread is the culprit.

Win 8.1 64 bits reporting: by uninstalling all the updates from 12 August 2014 StrokesPlus was able to work good again.

Detailing my bug: when I made a press of the Control button, or with combinations like Ctrl+Shift, StrokesPlus's tray icon started having the "Forbidden" sign over it. By pressing Ctrl+Shift again, the "Forbidden" sign disappeared. Tested under Portable 64 bits and Signed 64 versions.

[Edited message: changed 16 August for 12 August (day of MS's publication of the update)]

Yea, I'm going to hold off on further research at the moment, since nothing makes sense anyway, especially based on this article:

Though I guess that article is kind of saying the same thing. Regardless, nothing is mentioned anywhere about keyboard hooks for programs with UIAccess set to true and/or running under Program Files (or something...no idea)

I'm not sure if this helps, but I can consistently get StrokesPlus to disable itself by holding Ctrl for about one second, and pressing and releasing just about any other key re-enables it.

Thanks to joelspadin I tried holding Ctrl for one second as well, this disabled StrokesPlus. I remembered this was also set as the "Ignore Key" in my preferences (which I think is a default setting). I've disabled the "Ignore Key" (set to None) and haven't had any problems since.

I never use the ignore key anyway :)

Thank you Sander, it seems to be the solution also to my problem. I've never used the ignore key either.

Oh hey, that works. Maybe the ignore key just gets stuck on now if you hold it for too long instead of turning off when you release the key as it did before.

Oh, well there you go; that's very likely the culprit, the z-order issue.

Disabling Control as an ignore key has worked for me too.

Don't know if it helps, but I didn't get this on an older version 2.6.something. It only started happening when I updated about a couple of weeks ago that I started to have the problem.

I'm experiencing the same issue of Strokes disabling, since I use Alt button, which my ignore button, in combination with Shift to switch between languages for the keyboard. I need to have Alt button as the ignore key because of software I use is depended on Alt plus mouse buttons for navigation. So is there an option to avoid this from happening without having the ignore button as none?

Thanks!

I've been having this disable-no-smoking icon happen (win 8.1).. extremely frequently... it was maddening. I'm talking about sometimes several times in 10 minutes. But, like suggested, I just disabled ignore-Ctrl key and I've been without an incidence for over an hour. Seems like it is "fixed" for me. Since I never pressed the Ctrl key to ignore even once in the year since I've had strokes installed, it's not a big loss )

lucky for me because I can't live without strokes plus.. I tried to go without and was having mini-panic attacks pretty much lol.. this and x-button mouse control are the best things ever

Fixed. That's awesome! Thanks!

BTW, S+ doesn't work under Windows XP SP3 ("not a valid Win32 application") anymore. Possible solutions:

Glad to hear! I used the XP toolset and recompiled all of the 2.8.3 versions and re-uploaded; hopefully it's that easy because I'm not terribly motivated to make it work on XP

No luck. "The procedure entry point K32EnumProcesses could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.DLL"

Maybe this will help: http://forums.codeguru.com/showthread.php?542741-how-to-safely-use-EnumProcesses-older-and-new-OS&p=2143807#post2143807
